This is a self-check guide, not an official HUD inspection tool or a substitute for your PHA's actual inspection. HUD is transitioning from HQS (Housing Quality Standards) to NSPIRE (National Standards for the Physical Inspection of Real Estate); the compliance deadline for Housing Choice Voucher programs has been extended multiple times and is currently set at February 1, 2027, though smoke and carbon monoxide alarm requirements are already in effect. Always confirm current requirements with your local PHA before an inspection.
